Weekend Homework - Read Carefully.

Research Paper Warm Up:

To gear up for your final ENG 101/103 Paper, you will watch a 1-hour documentary via YouTube called Philosophy and the Matrix.  You will also read and discuss some particularly strong examples from past cluster students.

Here's the weekend assignment:

Part 1)
Watch the documentary. Take notes which you will be able to use on a quiz on Monday. Don't worry if you don't understand it all. Do your best.

Part 2)
Print and read these 2 sample student papers assigned to you. Be prepared to discuss the way it uses the film and outside research in class on Monday.

Sample A: Gregory Smith's "Can You Handle The Truth?: The Matrix and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave."

Sample B: Donnie Jone's "The Red Truth Prevails."

Extra Credit!!

Extra Credit

Students may earn up to FOUR bonus points added to their final average through extra credit. Only 2 points can come from each kind of project.

1) Adaptations - Watch a film / theatrical performance / dance (or listen to an opera) based on one of the plays/novels we have read for class. Write a 3-page paper explaining the ways the adaptation transforms the original (what is added? what is removed?). Do you feel these changes add vitality to the original? ruin it? Explain your answer. (Worth 2 bonus points: essay must be at C-level or higher to earn credit)

2) Creative Option - Write a 5+-page short story or play - or a long poem or song - that explores themes from the texts we’ve read for class. Or provide a 10+ minute performance piece or one major (or 2 minor) works of art that does the same thing. Provide a “statement” of at least 1 page that explains the connection. Non-verbal versions require 2 page “artist’s statements.” (Worth 2 bonus points: statement must be at C-level or higher to earn credit)

Monday, April 2nd - Class Cancelled

Hello. Class is cancelled today. For Wedensday:
* Finish A Streetcar Named Desire, if you haven't already.
* Come up with the thesis of your paper. Remember, the general assignment is a compare/contrast paper of the characters Blanche and Stanley. Of course, as we discussed in class Thursday, you will want to narrow that question down to one topic or idea. For example "How does Tennessee Williams use stage directions (the non-verbal instructions that accompany the play's spoken aspects) to develop the characters Stanley and Blanche?" or "How does alcohol function in the play's characterizations of Blanche and Stanley" - etc. Your thesis is the answer to this question. Be creative!!! Here are tips on thesis development:

* Complete an outline of at least 300 words that includes the thesis, the topic sentences of at least four body paragraphs and at least two pieces of supporting evidence for each topic sentence. Try to identify some of the quotes from the play you will be using. Here's a great web resource for outlining compare/contrast essays. Remember, you can use bullet points or numbering systems to outline: There's no "correct" method as far as I am concerned. Also, other than the thesis - which MUST be a complete sentence, there is no need to write complete sentences for any other material at this point. This is an opportunity to "think on paper" and to see the design of your paper emerge before your eyes!

* Post your working thesis as a comment to this blog as soon as you have it!

Weds 3/21

Peer Review of Paper 1: “My Goal”

By today, you should have your final draft of at least 600 words posted on your own personal blog.

A) Discussion of Revision and Peer Review (20 Min)

B) First, on your OWN essay you will do a few things to make this project easier on your potential reviewers (20 Min)

1. Make sure the link to your blog on our course blog works!
2. Open the blog post to edit and put your thesis statement in bold or underline it. Now do the same for the topic sentences of each paragraph. Number your paragraphs (“1” For intro, “2” for first body paragraph, etc.)
3. Check to be sure the entry is easily readable (i.e. not too small and not in a “unique” font or odd color).
4. Write a quick “comment” on your own blog letting potential reviewers know what kind of feedback you feel is especially important to you.

C). REVIEW #1 (1 hour)
For your first assigned peer review:
Answer each of the following questions as a comment on the person’s blog. Be sure to respond in a thorough, helpful and in-depth way by providing examples and concrete suggestions. You are helping your classmate succeed, so do not be afraid of providing good feedback, even if some of the things you point out are things that need to be strengthened. You must use the ENTIRE time!!!
Remember, you will be graded on the quality of your feedback.

D) Wrap up and reading the comments. Be sure to THANK the person for their efforts!!!

E) (at home) use these comments in your final revision. You do not have to take the reviewer’s advice, but please consider each suggestion before choosing to accept or reject it.

Peer Review Questions to Answer

Before answering these question, please read the entire essay!

1. Write a paragraph describing the strongest aspects of this essay.

Intro Paragraph:

3. Is it one sentence (not more or less) and a statement rather than a question? Y N
4. How could the thesis be strengthened?
5. Is there any “attention getting” aspect to the intro and how could it be improved (or can you suggest any ideas if there isn’t one?):
6. Is there a clear “essay map”? Could it be improved?
7. Do the elements provided in the “essay map” line up exactly with the topics of the body paragraphs (and are they in the same order)?
8. Is there any extra “fluff”/filler or other “warm up” generic stuff in the intro that should be cut? Please identify it for the writer.

Body Paragraphs – Repeat for each body paragraph:

9. Is topic sentence clear? Y N
10. Does it obviously relate to and support the thesis? Y N
11. How could it be strengthened?
12. Do details adequately support the topic sentence? If not, give suggestions.
13. Is there a nice mix of “kinds” of detail? If not, give suggestions.

15. Is clarification, “connection” or better analysis needed at any point? If so, give suggestions.
